Oscar Niemeyer is today over 100 years old, and still going strong. One of his masterpieces, beside the building of the Brazilian capital Brasil, are situated on the Portuguese island Madeira – Pestana Casino Park Hotel – with five star hotel, congress centre and a casino. It was designed in 1966 but not completed until 1976. After thirty years the complex was in need of a thorough refurbishment and in May last year it was reopened, after 12 months of work, under the supervision of architect Jaime Morais, who’s just like Niemeyer Brazilian. Have you planned your summer vacation trip yet? Madeira has got many reasons to pay a visit, and Niemeyer’s complex is definitely on of them. |
The director Wes Anderson has a talent for visual storytelling and he makes fantastic films. But it is the staged choreography and, the magical and memorable moments, which can be the source of great inspiration for architects. So is definitely the case with his latest movie The Darjeeling Narrative. Tino Schaedler and Alice Charlotte writes for the magazine Mark continues like this: “In this visually demanding homage to the landscape and spirituality of India, the story traces three reunited brothers on a spiritual quest that quickly turns into a series of uplanned events. The most poignant and cinematically revealing moment in the film is when the brothers are stranded in a remote village, attending the funeral of a young boy… The choreography shows a well-defined composition of the three main characters walking in the midground with staged relatives and scenery in the foreground and background. The arrangement creates visual depth and parallax, like watching an animated version of a vast Renaissance painting portaying several religious stories by travelling from one side of the painting to the other. This shot tells a complete story on its own.” So, if you’re into architecture, this ought to be next movie to watch. |
